Win a Copy of The Complete Recipe Writing Guide
I'm giving away two copies of this useful new book.
Here’s a big new book that took author Raeanne Sarazen years to write: The Complete Recipe Writing Guide: Mastering Recipe Development, Writing, Testing, Nutritional Analysis and Food Styling. Published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, it weighs in at 400 pages and costs around $50.
You don’t have to be a dietitian, nutritionist or health professional to benefit from reading it. If you write recipes, it will help you understand the recipe development process more deeply. Plus there’s a chapter on food styling, photography and videos. It will help you plan, shoot and edit stills and video.
This book is packed with useful charts, lists and tips. Many industry professionals reviewed it before publication. I like how Raeanne uses sample recipes to explain the development process, with the goal of making your recipes healthier, especially for those on special diets.
A registered dietician and chef, Raeanne has been part of our industry for years. She translates complex nutrition recommendations into recipes for people with diet-related conditions and simplifies recipes from chefs. At the Chicago Tribune, she was the test kitchen director and assistant food editor. She also worked at Charlie Trotter’s Michelin-starred restaurant and is a freelance writer.
(Full disclosure: Raeanne hired me to work on aspects of this book and its promotion. She lists my book, Will Write for Food, in the bibliography, quotes from it, and I contributed a tip in a sidebar.)
While Will Write for Food focuses mostly on the writing aspects of our field, The Complete Recipe Writing Guide covers mostly recipe development, as shown in the first six chapters:
1. Guidelines for recipe development
2. Developing recipes for health and wellness
3. Creating plant-based recipes
4. Modifying fat, sodium and sugar
5. Developing recipes for food allergies and intolerances
6. Developing Gluten-Free and Low FODMAP recipes.
Other chapters focus on recipe writing and editing; recipe testing; nutritional analysis; and food styling, photography and videos.
